Read a good book and you'll come across similar stuff multiple times a page. Sorry.ĭoes anyone else find it ridiculous that people will literally part with their money when they read some pointless comment that is perhaps vaguely witty? 99% of the stuff that gets gifted gold, in my experience, is really pretty much utterly unimpressive by itself. We're talking about different functions of equipment and I'm sure there is a way to make it safer, BASE parachutes aren't it though.Įdit: drunk grammar is drunk sometimes.

It reduces the G forces in the fall so that it's bearable.

IF i'm using a screamer then I hit a specific threshold and then the threads on the threads on the screamer fail and it extends that fall another 5-10 feet. If i fall 50 feet and there's a sudden stop then my back is going to be fucked up and i'll swing into the wall. It's designed so that if they fall specific threading in the webbing fails and reduces the G forces they experience when falling. It's an 'anchor' system that they use to attach themselves to their gear which is connected to the wall. Right now climbers use a special kind of webbing called a Screamer. With proper implimentation and advancements of technology directly related to this career then Yes, we could probably create a life saving technology. I appreciate your analysis of my comment. I was not limiting the idea of implementation to chutes, I was just suggesting that something could be used similarly to a parachute to save their life or save them from some harm. It seems that you have extensive knowledge of BASEjumping and/or parachuting, but that knowledge also seems to have limited your perspective. The point I was trying to make was that a device that could be used to stabilize, interrupt, or dampen a fall (note that the accident has already occurred, we're not talking prevention anymore) would be beneficial. I appreciate that you identified that prevention is a very effective safety method, but that's not what I was discussing. While it may be effective, and could probably be enforced to a greater extent, if also conflicts with your idea that the weight of a parachute would be annoying, especially considering that the video explicitly says that latching in at every point is a hassle and is tiring. I completely agree with your analysis, using the clips at every hold would be a very effective safety measure, and they are probably instructed to do so, but this is beside the point.

Insurance companies would crack down much harder on this than they would give incentive to give their climbers fucking parachutes. Realistically a much safer way to make this job safer would be to make them wear cameras and penalize/fire the guys who do not clip themselves in each time they reach for a new handhold to move up.

Keep in mind these climbers don't expect to fall so they will never be pushing away from the tower when they do. There is no way to have it deploy in the perfect scenario in a tumbling fall off the tower. There will never be a chute solely designed for this purpose. It's not as simple as "oh fuck i'm falling let me pull my Save All safety." I don't know if everybody here realizes just how difficult and dangerous BASE jumping is. A typical BASE Jumper has around 100 skydives before his first BASE exit. You would have to train these guys to sky dive. Slipping off of a hold will not send you into a good BASE jump trajectory.Ĭ.

This should technically go against tower climbing guidelines and training.ī. The ONLY situation he's going to fall in will be because he slips off while he wasn't clipped into the structure.Ī. He's never struggling for that next hand hold. Now consider that every movement the tower climber makes he always has a hand hold and a spot to clip into. He does this on his own volition risking his life everytime. He's chosen a special wall to try it out and is arguably the most suited to the task.Ī company that works in erecting/maintaining cell or radio towers can't just say "Here's a parachute, good luck!" He's literally the ONLY one who is doing this. Also it indicates that the only opportunity he has to exit the wall is when he's realized he won't be able to reach the next hand hold. The weather strolls in and he has trouble with the weather.

Here's a video of a VERY professional rock climber using a base parachute to modify the style of Free Solo'ing to essentially 'free base'.
